Common Questions

Fence FAQ — Bay Area Homeowners

What does a custom fence cost in the Bay Area?

Most residential wood fences in the Bay Area run $35–$85 per linear foot installed, depending on height, wood species, style, and extras like gates and lighting. Heart Con Redwood and board-on-board style sit at the higher end; Construction Common with a simple flat top is more budget-friendly. We provide a detailed quote after a free on-site visit.

What wood types do you offer?

We offer Heart Con Redwood (premium, all-heartwood), Common Clear Redwood, Construction Common Redwood, Western Red Cedar, and Pressure Treated Pine. Redwood and cedar are naturally rot-resistant and the most popular choices for Bay Area climate conditions.

How long does fence installation take?

Most residential fence projects are completed in 1–3 days once materials are on-site. Larger projects or complex terrain may take longer. We provide a project timeline before work begins.

Do I need a permit for a fence in San Jose or the Bay Area?

In most Bay Area jurisdictions, fences under 6 feet in the rear yard don't require a permit. Front yard fences and anything over 6 feet typically do. We're familiar with local requirements and will flag permit needs during your consultation.

What's the difference between board-on-board and privacy fencing?

A privacy fence has boards butted tightly edge-to-edge with no gaps — completely solid. Board-on-board overlaps each board by 1–2 inches on one side only, creating a layered look that still provides 100% privacy and is slightly more wind-resistant.

Do you install steel-framed gates?

Yes. For gates wider than 44 inches, we recommend steel-framed wood gates — a heavy-duty steel tube frame with wood infill boards. They don't sag or warp over time like all-wood gates can. We also install aluminum-framed and ornamental iron gates.
